Above Mosfellsbær lies a family-friendly hiking trail. Drive up Mosfellsdalur and turn right at the sign for Hlaðgerðarkot. Shortly thereafter, make another right turn into the Skammadalur cottage area. Proceed slowly to a small, unmarked parking lot. The hike begins at Æsustadafjall, a modest hill of 220 meters, encircled by Helgafell, Reykjafell, Grímansfell, and Mosfelli, with Lágafell and Úlfarsfell visible in the distance. From the parking area, a distinct jeep track leads up the mountain, which you can follow to the summit. You may choose to return from here, or continue along the path to Reykjafell, following the marked trail. At Reykjafell's peak, follow the marked route descending into Skammadalur, passing by the cottages, to return to the parking lot.
