This route takes you along a section of Ástjörn up to Ásfjall. Despite the mountain's modest height, it offers one of the best panoramic views in the capital area, encompassing the settlements and the surrounding mountain range. You can park at Ásvallaug or Hauka's sports area. The journey begins on a road with Ástjörn to your left, then veers off the paved path onto a well-worn trail bordered by lupines in the summer. The path remains clear and accessible. At Ásfjall's summit, an observatory provides a splendid vista, and there's also a large, square fortification, Ásfjallsvarða, initially erected by sailors as a navigational aid and later reinforced by British soldiers in World War II. The walk continues along the mountain's edge, then descends through the settlement, returning to the parking lot. Ástjörn og Ásfjall is a nature reserve, home to nesting flounder among other species. Traffic within the reserve is restricted from May 1st to July 15th to protect the wildlife. Nonetheless, the paved path remains open throughout the year. Ástjörn is distinguished by its exceptional natural beauty and diverse plant and animal life.
