The trail around Búrfellsgjá is an extremely beautiful trail and an ideal family hike. Búrfellgjá is a 3.5 km lava ridge that runs west from Búrfell. The lava sequence was created in a volcanic eruption that is believed to have erupted about 7000 years ago. The walk starts at the parking lot at Heiðmerkuvegur, southeast of Vífilsstaðahlið in Garðabær. There is a good sign that describes the route and the main landmarks. You walk along a complete row of lava and pass small caves that are fun to explore. At the end is Búrfellíð, which is a beautiful slag crater, but up to it is a slope with loose gravel, so you have to be careful there. When you get up, walk around the crater, where the view is magnificent. The path then follows back down the crater and you walk the same way back to the parking lot.
