In Garðabær there is an extremely beautiful hiking trail around Gálgaharun called Fógetastígur. We start from the parking lot at the roundabout where Vífilstaðavegur and Hraunholtsbraut meet. At the beginning of the walk, there is an educational sign about the history and ancient routes that is informative to read. The walk goes in a circle and is first walked along the beautiful scale-cut beach. Gálgahraun hides many different-sized cave scutes, cups, crevices and similar scutes. When you get to Lambhúsatjörn, the path bends to the south and then you walk towards the starting point. Distance about 5 km. The area is the northernmost part of the so-called Búrfell Lava, which flowed from the Búrfell volcano over 7000 years ago. Gálgahraun lava was protected in 2009 and the lava is mostly as it was when it flowed, and the geological formations, vegetation and birdlife are the prerequisites for the protection.
