A hiking trail around Hólmheiði and Rauðavatn that is a pleasant surprise. The area belongs to Austurheiði, but it is dominated by peatland and forestry, which is characterized by its bird life. The walk starts at the parking lot in Hádegismóar. There we walk to a good footpath that leads us into the heath. We follow the trail to Paradíssarskál, which is used a lot by dog owners, but dogs are allowed to roam free there. Then follow the path forward and turn right when the path splits. The walk then follows ridges above Rauðavatn, down to the lake and along it until we return to the parking lot. A good path system runs through the forest at Rauðavatn and the ring around the lake. The area is used all year round for hiking and horseback riding, and in the winter you can often see people skating and cross-country skiing.
