There are several routes to choose from starting in Kjarnaskógur. The most common begins below Kirkjustein and ascends a steep ridge to the cliffs. From there, the trail continues along glacier-worn cliffs through a forest belt and up to Gamli, the scouts' hut. The route shown on this map is slightly further north and longer. When beginning in Kjarnaskógur, follow the forest trail towards Naustaborgir, then turn and climb the hill through the forest where signs point to 'Gamli,' and follow the trail to the Gamli scout hut.
From Gamli, you can take an extra detour to Steinmenn, a set of large rock formations higher up in the area, before continuing north along the rocky belt to Fálkafell, another scout hut further north. From Fálkafell, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of the town and the fjord.
From Fálkafell, there are two routes to choose from: one follows the mountain bike track down to a parking lot for the Súlur hiking trail, and the other is a road track that passes a large cairn and continues down to Súluvegur, near the Norðurorka energy company facility.
If starting from the Glerárdalur Valley side, it is most common to begin at Súluvegur by the Norðurorka energy company facility and then walk in the opposite direction of the route described above.
The route traverses various surfaces, including road tracks, sheep tracks, rocks, bogs, and marshes. A large portion of the trail runs along the rocky belt above Naustaborgir and Kjarnaskógur, offering magnificent views.
Please note that the route is used by both pedestrians and cyclists. The scout cabins are locked and reserved for scout activities, but everyone is welcome to use the patio by the Gamli hut or the shelter by the cabins as resting places, provided it does not interfere with scouting activities.
