Selfjall and Sandfell are pleasant mountains not far from Suðurlandsvegur, just outside the capital area. They are not high and rather gentle and therefore easy to walk for people of all ages. You walk along a ridge above the Waldorf school in Lækjarbotnum on Selfjall and from there down to the lava rim of Húsfellsbruna and up to Sandfell. In order to add to the ascent, we go to Selfjall again on the way back. The route is particularly beautiful in the spring and late summer when the sunset over Faxaflói is enjoyed. Note that there is a parking lot on the hill before driving down to the school, and walkers are kindly asked not to enter the school grounds.
You can go to Selfjall and Sandfell all year round, but in winter you have to take a chain spike (Esjubrodda) and there is no need to take the steepest route up to Sandfell, rather choose more gentle routes and walk in crow paths. In the spring, while the ground is frozen, there can be mud there like anywhere else.
