Skólavarða refers to a carin made by students of The Akureyri Junior College early in the last century. The hike begins just above the intersection of Veigastaðavegur and the old road over Vaðlaheiði mountain (Road no. 832), but there is a sign marked Skólavarða by the road and cars can be parked on the side of the road. If you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, you can drive the first 2-300 meters along a rough track and where it ends there is another sign. The path up to the Skólavarða carin is marked and rather easy to cross, but quite steep and wet in parts. The steepest sections are soon after the start of the walk and then there is a steep but short section up to the top, shortly before you reach the cairn.
