There is a good 2,6 km long path around Lake Vífilsstaðavatn. Along the path are outdoor benches where it is ideal to sit down and enjoy nature and the diverse birdlife that is by the lake. Educational signs have been put up, about the life on the lake, birds and vegetation. The old wharf on the west bank was renovated a few years ago to facilitate access for the disabled. The surroundings of the lake are desirable for outdoor activities in all seasons, from there you can walk up to the Gunnhildi guard at the top of Vífilsstaðahlíð, where there is a lookout sign and a good view. There is also a hiking trail up to Grunnavatnaskarð.
Dogs are prohibited in the reserve during the breeding season, from April 15-15. August Fishing license in the lake is from April 1st to September 15th.
