Opening of Grindavík town – Important safety information
On Monday, October 21, access to Grindavík was opened. Below is important information for tourism providers and those who work and live in the area.
Safety Plans Due by November 4
Even though the area is accessible, it’s important to keep in mind that there are still some risks, and safety precautions are needed. The Icelandic Tourist Board therefore requests that all tourism providers organizing trips to Grindavík and the surrounding volcanic area submit safety plans for these trips. The deadline for submitting these plans is Monday, November 4, and they should be sent electronically to oryggi@ferdamalastofa.is.
Guidelines for Businesses
Örugg Engineering has created safety guidelines for tourism companies (in Icelandic only) planning to operate in Grindavík and nearby areas. It’s essential that companies review these guidelines. Information on creating safety plans is also available on our web.
Evacuation Siren Tests on October 30
On Wednesday, October 30, at 11 a.m., evacuation sirens will be tested in Grindavík and Svartsengi. This test is part of routine checks on remote equipment linked to the sirens, ensuring they work as needed.
We encourage tourism providers and residents to use this opportunity to practice evacuation procedures, even if a full drill isn’t conducted. It’s important to regularly review evacuation and safety plans for the Grindavík area.
Please inform people that this is only a test to avoid misunderstandings that might make people think there’s an actual evacuation. We also ask you to explain this to anyone who might be uncertain about the nature of this drill.
