Some Highland Routes Open, but Travelers Warned

Several highland routes have been opened today, including into Dreki and Kverkfjöll, as well as the north of Kjalvegur. The highlands have remained closed unusually long this year due to very heavy winter snow and a cool, late spring.

ICE-SAR search & rescue is warning travelers that although some routes have now been opened, conditions in the interior remain highly unusual and much more difficult than usual for the time of year.

There is still a lot of snow, both on roads and hiking trails. The organization therefore advises people to consult the roads administration’s highland conditions map before driving in the remote interior region.

Those planning to hike in the highlands should be aware that there is very deep snow in places, which has now become heavy and wet. Hiking paths which were clear and accessible at this time last year remain suitable only for experienced and well-equipped hikers this year, a press release states.

Despite today’s openings, the majority of highland routes remain off limits – though the current fine, warm weather could see them opened up in the near future.
