Special caution needed at two popular destinations
The Suðurnes district police would like to draw the public's attention to the current situation that requires special caution at two popular destinations in Reykjanes Peninsula.
Travel warning for Valahnúkur cliff
Due to new cracks in Valahnúkur cliff on the tip of Reykjanes Peninsula, it has been decided to warn against travel there until the matter has been assessed by experts and other relevant parties. Work is underway to assess the safety of the area and further information will be released as the matter develops. A warning has been issued for cracks in Valahnúkur since 2016. Valahnúkur is composed of tuff layers, pillow lava and breccia. It is constantly crumbling from the edges and has been doing so for decades. There is a warning sign at the beginning of the footpath to the cliff and the path is also closed with a fence. The local municipality has taken steps to increase the signage at the site due to this. The cracks can be seen in the pictures to the side.
Sinkholes near the Bridge Between Continents
It is also appropriate to warn of subsidence or sinkholes in the vicinity of the Bridge Between Continents, see image below. They can be difficult to navigate and may be difficult to detect, especially in poor visibility. Tourists are therefore advised to exercise caution and stay on marked hiking trails in the area.
We remind you that this announcement is made as a precaution and ask people to exercise caution and respect signs and instructions in the area.
